About
Handroll.TV v0.1 takes one click to create a video player for the Apple iPad, Google Chrome, and most other web browsers without giving up control of your video hosting. Take the player, put it on your blog, website, or mobile website lickety split. If you have a whole library of hosted videos, just have a nerdy friend call our API to create players for all your videos in no time.
The fine print: We’re HTML5 bigots (see below), so we only support H.264 and OGG Theora compressed video files. The player has no Flash fallback for browsers that don’t support HTML5 (i.e. IE) and for Mozilla’s decision not to support H.264. And, we don’t host video today. You provide a link to the source file and we automatically generate an HTML5 player with standard controls and embed code. Vimeo, YouTube and similar links — which are player links not video file links — will not work.
This is only v0.1. We hope it soothes your greatest pain, but we’re not counting on it yet.
Handroll.TV is data management for utterly public video. HTML5 video makes it very tough to hide anything — player code, usage, video description metadata, social gestures, editing layers, and a hundred other savory morsels. That data feast will all be floating around and available to slice, dice, layer, and roll. Bridging from data availability to great new applications will require open services in which that data is gathered and laid out for use. Handroll.TV is working to be one of those services.
